Judge puts Conyers on primary ballot

Longtime Michigan Rep. John Conyers was put back on the primary ballot after the secretary of state found he had not submitted enough signatures.

WASHINGTON, May 23 (UPI) -- A federal judge has overruled the Michigan Secretary of State to put longtime Detroit Rep. John Conyers on the primary ballot.

The news comes within hours of the secretary of state's office releasing its finding that Conyers had failed to gather enough signatures to clear the 1,000-signature threshold to qualify under Michigan law

Conyers' lawyers had challenged the law, arguing in a federal court motion the requirement that only registered voters could circulate ballot petitions.

Conyers was first elected in 1964, and was set to take over as the Dean of the House when his fellow Michigander, Rep. John Dingell, retires this year.
