WASHINGTON, May 9 (UPI) -- Noah, a name usually associated with the Biblical patriarch and ark-builder, was the most popular name for newborn U.S. boys in 2013, the Social Security Administration said.

The name rose from fourth place in 2012, ending Jacob's 14-year run. Last year, for the first time in 30 years a name other than Michael or Jacob took the top spot.

On the girls' side, Sophia was the most popular name for the third year. Emma was in second place, followed by Olivia, Isabella and Ava.

The Irish-sounding Liam was in second place for boys. Jacob dropped to third, followed by Mason and William.

Emily had a long run as the most popular girl's name from 1996 to 2007. The Social Security Administration has data going back to 1914 that shows Mary was the No. 1 girl's name for decades, in first place for most years through 1961.

Since then, names like Kimberly, Madison and Ashley have come and gone.

Boys tended to be given more conventional names until recently, with John, Robert and Michael all enjoying many years as the No. 1 name.
