TAMPA, Fla., May 9 (UPI) -- The family found dead in their burning Florida mansion were killed by gunshots, investigators say.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office did not confirm that the four bodies discovered by firefighters Wednesday were Darrin and Kim Campbell and their children, Colin, 19, and Megan, 13. Kim Campbell's father told WFLA-TV in Tampa that they were his daughter and her family.
At a news conference Thursday evening, Col. Donna Lusczynski, a sheriff's spokeswoman, said the four had been shot. She also said that Darrin Campbell purchased more than $600 worth of fireworks on Sunday.
"Fireworks could have been used to ignite and keep the fire aflame," Lusczynski said. "We can also confirm that he purchased several gas cans at a local home improvement store that same day."
DNA testing and dental records are being used to identify the bodies, Lusczynski said. She said investigators found a gun registered to Darrin Campbell in the house and are trying to determine if he killed his family, set the fire and then took his own life.
The Campbells rented the house in Avila, an upscale community near Tampa, from tennis star James Blake. Megan and Colin were students at Carrollwood Day School.
