Affluenza teen's family settles with another victim, pays nearly $3M to paralyzed boy

FORT WORTH, Texas, May 6 (UPI) -- Sergio Molina was paralyzed last june when Texas teen Ethan Couch, driving drunk, slammed his pickup into a group of people attending to a stalled car.

Four people were killed and nine others were injured in the incident which earned Couch no jail time thanks to his legal team’s defense that the then-sixteen-year-old had been too spoiled by his wealthy parents to have ever faced legitimate consequences for his actions, and therefore grew up with a sense of entitlement and poor judgement, popularizing the term “affluenza.”

For killing four people and injuring nine others while driving at over three times the legal blood-alcohol level in Texas, Couch was sentenced to probation and rehabilitation.

The Couch family has already settled out of court with two other victims, and now newly filed court documents show they’ll be paying out nearly $3 million to Sergio Molina, who can only smile and blink his eyes since the accident.

According to the filing, $1 million in cash will go to a trust set up for Molina, with another $800,000 to be distributed in annuity payments, $215,000 to his family, and close to another million expected to go toward the family’s legal fees.

Other victims are pursuing their civil cases through to trial.
