VILONIA, Ark., April 30 (UPI) -- A 19-year-old man ferried 10 disabled veterans to safety Sunday as tornadoes ripped through Vilonia, Ark.
Eighteen people died in Arkansas as tornadoes spawned north of Little Rock, and that number could have been higher had the residents at Gunter's Veterans Home not been transported to a nearby tornado shelter.
Christian Gunter, who works at his family's long-term care facility in Vilonia, took 10 disabled veterans to a tornado shelter at a church about a mile away as the storm raged on.
The facility's roof sustained major damage due to the tornado. The Gunter family home, however, wasn't so lucky.
"It's always our priority to take the best care of them that we can possibly do. Our guys have risked a lot and it's a great opportunity for us to help them out," he said.
It was "a total loss," Gunter said.
