San Diego Naval base lockdown prompted by sailor playing with air soft gun

SAN DIEGO, April 24 (UPI) -- Personnel at Naval Base Point Loma in San Diego were told to shelter in place Thursday morning after a report was called in on what turned out to be a sailor playing with an air soft gun.

The partial lockdown on the base was issued around 10:50 a.m. after a tenant at the base reported an armed person.

Base Commanding Officer Scott Adams said the person playing with the air soft gun was a "young, enlisted sailor" who lives on base.

"He was actually firing shots of the air soft pistol out of the window toward a mirror in the parking lot," Adams said.

The sailor and a friend were both taken into custody without incident.

Weapons aren't permitted in barracks on the base, but it wasn't clear if an air soft gun is considered a weapon.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service was investigating the incident.
