Sen. Boozman undergoes emergency heart surgery

The first-term Republican is recovering from emergency surgery Tuesday afternoon.

WASHINGTON, April 22 (UPI) -- Arkansas Sen. John Boozman underwent emergency heart surgery Tuesday morning, his office confirmed in a statement.

The Republican senator, 63, was set to attend breakfast with city mayors in northwest Arkansas to discuss ongoing construction of an I-49 changeover and later a ribbon cutting for the first part of the Bella Vista Bypass.

Boozman was taken to Mercy Hospital Northwest Arkansas by an ambulance Tuesday morning, and the surgery was reportedly "uneventful."

The senator's office said Boozman is "receiving excellent care," and he is expected to make a full recovery.
