Obama: Affordable Care Act bringing young adults into ranks of insured

WASHINGTON, April 17 (UPI) -- The Affordable Care Act is "working," President Obama said Thursday, citing statistics that more than one-third of those who have signed up are under 35.

The president told White House reporters that 8 million people are now covered by "Obamacare." While critics predicted those enrolled would tend to be older and often chronically sick, Obama said 35 percent are younger adults.

"This thing is working," Obama said.

Earlier in the afternoon, Obama and Vice President Joe Biden met with members of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and with insurance company executives.

In his briefing, the president said millions of those who have signed up for insurance in recent weeks did not have coverage. He said that shows the law is expanding the ranks of those with health insurance, not just moving those already covered into different plans.
