ANNAPOLIS, Md., April 14 (UPI) -- A kayaker says he saw a party on shore before he was shot in the stomach as he paddled a creek off Chesapeake Bay in Maryland.

Anne Arundel County police planned to search the shores of Bodkin Creek on Monday. David Seafolk-Koch, 56, of Reston, Md., told investigators he saw people gathered at a bonfire Saturday but could not give them an exact location.

“All of a sudden, he looks down and sees a red dot consistent with a laser and feels a searing pain,” police spokeswoman Candy Thomson said.

Thomson called the attack "a real head-scratcher." She said Seaford-Koch might not have been targeted and have been hit accidentally.

The creek is in Pasadena, between Baltimore and Annapolis. Natural resource officers in boats were also searching the area.

Seafolk-Koch said that after the shooting he was unable to get to shore until Sunday morning, police said. He was taken to a hospital after a property owner found him.

Thomson said the bullet was removed from Seaford-Koch's rib cage. She said he was "very lucky."
