COLORADO SPRINGS, April 14 (UPI) -- A contract band coach at two Colorado high schools has been charged with having an affair with a 16-year-old student, authorities said Monday.

David Hurd, 38, who was arrested Friday, has been charged with sexual exploitation of a minor and obscenity, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said. No information was released about the victim beyond his or her age.

Nanette Anderson, a spokeswoman for the Academy School District in Colorado Springs, said a background check on Hurd last year was negative. Hurd has been a band coach and choreographer at Air Academy High School and Liberty High School since last fall.

Because Hurd has worked at many schools around the country, investigators are worried that this may not be his first offense, the sheriff's office said.

The investigation began in February, when the alleged affair was reported to a school resource officer at Air Academy High School. Investigators conducted online searches and interviewed witnesses before making the arrest. His home was searched Friday.

Bail was set at $50,000.
