Van Houten sextuplets: Dad dies at age 39

HOLLAND, Mich., April 11 (UPI) -- Ben Van Houten, the father of the first set of sextuplets born in Michigan, died Wednesday after suffering a heart attack. He was 39.

Van Houten had just finished putting together a trampoline for his seven children -- six 10-year-olds and one 7-year-old -- when he suffered a sudden heart attack, his father-in-law, Calvin Reimink, said.

“He was always spending time with the kids,” Reimink said, adding that he was the best son-in-law he could have asked for.

Van Houten and his wife, Amy, made headlines in January 2004 when they gave birth to the first surviving set of sextuplets in Michigan. They had another daughter, Drew, who is 7.
