Cronut bakery reopens in New York after mouse infestation

Dominique Ansel Bakery closed briefly to deal with what officials called a "severe mouse infestation."

NEW YORK, April 8 (UPI) -- Cronut fans returned to the long lines at Dominque Ansel Bakery in Soho when the popular, trend-settling eatery reopened on Tuesday morning.

Dominique Ansel, birthplace of the donut-croissant super-pastry, shut down last week when a patron snapped video of a mouse running across the bakery floor.

New York City Health Department officials said that the establishment had a "severe mouse infestation that requires professional pest control services."

"As a small one-shop bakery, we often feel like we're being looked at under a tremendous microscope," the bakery said in a statement. "The news was dramatically sensationalized. A lot of time people don't see the larger ramifications of their actions and how a tiny video of a mouse running across the screen for three seconds can cause harm and damages to an honest, small business that people's livelihood depends on."

Owner Dominique Ansel welcomed customers back to the bakery on Tuesday, telling queuing patrons that he would celebrate the reopening with a one-day-only cronut special.

"We made a special Cronut for today. The theme is Rocky. It’s about, you take a hit, you go down but you come back up stronger, and we keep moving forward and make what we believe," he said.

The bakery thanked supporters in a statement via Facebook and promised that their facilities had improved.

"We are deeply sorry for any disappointment that we may have caused you. Taking this opportunity, we have completely fortified our facilities with a full reconstruction and re-cementing, taking every issue seriously in an effort to provide an even more pristine environment for our guests. As you know, we cook in completely opened kitchens, so everything we do is in full view," the post read.

"Looking forward, our hope is that honest, hard-working businesses should not have to face cruel and sensationalized attacks that are not framed in the proper context. And systems should not be abused to single-out any one business over another. We urge our customers to seek deeper details and answers before jumping to conclusions," it continued.
