A Pittsburgh-area woman called police after drowning her 3-year-old son in the bathtub and attempting to kill his older brother.

A police complaint said that Laurel Michelle Schlemmer, 40, of McCandless told detectives "crazy voices" spoke to her. She also allegedly said she thought she would do a better job with her oldest son, 7, while the 6-year-old and toddler would be "better off in heaven."

Schlemmer has been charged with the murder of Luke Schlemmer. She also faces charges that include attempted murder and aggravated assault.

Police said they got a call just after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday reporting a possible drowning. Schlemmer allegedly said she told the boys to get into the tub after she got home from walking the oldest boy to the school bus stop.

Mark Schlemmer, her husband, was at work.

Laurel Schlemmer pleaded guilty in 2009 to leaving a toddler in a hot car for 20 minutes at a shopping mall.

Bob Majersky, a neighbor, described Schlemmer as a stay-at-home mom who was often out in the yard with her sons.

“I just saw them yesterday playing ball in the yard,” he said.
