Boston firefighters dig through ashes to their find fallen comrade's wedding ring

Two Boston firefighters lost their lives last week responding to a nine alarm blaze in a brownstone on Beacon street in Boston’s Back Bay: Michael R. Kennedy, 33, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps., and Lt. Edward J. Walsh, 43, husband and father of three.

But Walsh, a married man, wasn’t wearing his wedding ring when they removed his body from the building.

Walsh’s wife, Kristen, asked her late husband’s colleagues to help her locate the band.

WBCV reports that a search of the firehouse failed to turn up the ring, but after hours of searching and sifting through the muddy ashes and scorched debris of the burnt-out brownstone on Beacon Street Tuesday, Patty Kenneally Donovan, the first woman appointed to the Boston Fire Department finally found Walsh’s ring.

Donovan returned Walsh’s wedding band to his widow on the eve of her husband’s funeral.
