A young man who had been in a coma since an allegedly drunk driver hit a crowd at the South by Southwest festival in Austin has become the fourth to die.

DeAndre Tatum, 18, nicknamed Dre, was one of more than 20 people injured in the crash two weeks ago. He had been in a medically induced coma at University Medical Center Brackenridge in Austin.

Tatum's girlfriend, Curtisha "Tish" Davis, 18, was seriously injured, including a broken neck, leg and arm.

Rashad Owens, 21, of Killeen, Texas, is being held in lieu of $3 million bail on charges that include three counts of capital murder and aggravated assault with a motor vehicle. Investigators say he was drunk and trying to get away from police when he turned onto a street that had been closed for the festival and hit a crowd of people, killing two immediately. A third person died a few days later.

Tatum graduated in 2013 from Trimble Technical High School in Fort Worth, where his girlfriend is a senior. Relatives and friends said they had expected him to recover from his injuries.

“He is the kind of guy that you love to love,” the Rev. Kyev Tatum of Fort Worth, who is not related to DeAndre, told the Dallas Morning News. “He was funny, he loved people, he loved life. He brought out the best in those around him.”

Owens could face another murder charge, authorities said.
