Former President Jimmy Parter told NBC's Andrea Mitchell during a Sunday morning episode of Meet the Press that President Barack Obama never asks him for advice on dealing with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Unfortunately the answer is no. President Obama doesn't, but previous presidents have called on me," Carter, 89, said.

The 39th president, who is promoting a new book, Call to Action, also said that he regularly uses snail-mail to communicate with foreign leaders.

“I have felt that my own communications are probably monitored,” he said of the National Security Agency. "When I want to communicate with a foreign leader privately, I type or write the letter myself, put it in the post office and mail it, because I believe if I send an e-mail, it will be monitored."
