Police said Rappoport, who served in senior positions in the Commerce Department, approached a 28-year-old woman at a store Jan. 31. As she was leaving, Rappoport pulled up in his vehicle and asked her to get in, police said. Once she got in, Rappoport allegedly locked the doors and drove to another location where he sexually assaulted the woman, police said.

The woman managed to escape and fled, police said.

Along with working at the Department of Commerce, Rappoport worked for Sen. John McCain of Arizona and other Republican lawmakers, as well as for the Downey McGrath Group as a lobbyist in Washington.
