“I've learned that my father, Fred Phelps, Sr., pastor of the 'God Hates Fags' Westboro Baptist Church, was ex-communicated from the ‘church’ back in August of 2013,” Nathan Phelps wrote on Facebook. “He is now on the edge of death at Midland Hospice house in Topeka, Kansas.”

Nathan Phelps left the infamous Kansas church more than 30 years ago and has since advocated for same-sex causes.

Steve Drain, a spokesman from Westboro Baptist Church says the younger Phelps isn't well-informed about the nature of his father's illness. He said Fred Phelps is a patient in Midland Care Hospice.

"He has a couple things going on," Drain said of Fred Phelps' condition. "The source that says he's near death is not well informed."
