Most harmful substance poll: tobacco first, sugar worse than marijuana

NEW YORK, March 12 (UPI) -- Americans consider sugar more harmful to health than marijuana, a poll released Wednesday indicated.

When asked in a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll which of the four substances is most harmful, 49 percent of respondents chose tobacco, with alcohol next at 24 percent. Sugar received 15 percent and marijuana only 8 percent.

The poll also indicated 57 percent said they had "seen, read or heard a lot" of news recently about marijuana, compared to 44 percent who said the same about the Affordable Care Act, 39 percent about Russia's military incursion of Ukraine and 34 percent regarding courts overturning same-sex marriage laws.

The poll was based on telephone interviews with 1,000 American adults March 5-9. The margin or error was 3.6 percentage points.
