Five-alarm fire in San Francisco under control

SAN FRANCISCO, March 12 (UPI) -- San Francisco firefighters Wednesday controlled a five-alarm fire in an apartment complex under construction, they said.

The fire began Tuesday afternoon and destroyed a $250 million multistory residential project in the city's Mission District, the Bay Area News Group reported.

"It was a phenomenal display of teamwork," San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said of the 150-person effort to contain the fire and evacuate two nearby apartment buildings. One firefighter suffered burns to his hands, and another suffered an ankle injury, but no serious injuries were reported.

The blaze spread quickly through the building, and one wall collapsed Tuesday evening. A fire department dispatcher confirmed internal walls were collapsing as well.

By Wednesday the fire was contained, but water was still being poured on hot spots and there were fears additional walls would collapse, the report said.

The cause of the fire has yet to be established.
