Winklevoss twins land Virgin Galactic tickets to space, pay with Bitcoin

NEW YORK, March 6 (UPI) -- The Winklevoss twins are going to space.

Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss -- best known for their legal battle with Mark Zuckerberg over Facebook -- have just paid their $250,000 Virgin Galactic tickets entirely with Bitcoin. The brothers broke the news in a post made to their website, Winklevoss Capital on Wednesday.

"Cameron and I have decided to use our Bitcoin to take the plunge, or rather propulsion, into space," Tyler wrote in a blog entry. "Why? Because Bitcoin and Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic are two technologies that meaningfully represent our focus at Winklevoss Capital -- the reduction of pain-points and friction in an effort to build a better world."

The venture capitalist were early backers of the company and reportedly own about 40,000 bitcoins (about $27 million in U.S. dollars). The brothers will be joining the likes of Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio in their journey 60 miles above earth.

Virgin group founder Richard Branson announced in November of 2013 that Virgin Galactic would be accepting bitcoin payments for its space flights. He also shared the news about the Winklevosses upcoming adventure on Twitter.

Last month the Winklovoss twins made headlines after launching Winkdex, "a pioneering effort in the analysis and presentation of global bitcoin pricing."
