British man indicted for hacking computers of Federal Reserve

NEW YORK, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- A British man faces new charges of hacking the Federal Reserve's computer servers and stealing confidential information, say federal prosecutors in New York.

The hacker, Lauri Love, 28, of Suffolk, England, allegedly published the information, including names, email addresses and phone numbers, on a website he controlled, Courthouse News Service reported Thursday.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara called Love "a sophisticated hacker" who left people "vulnerable to malicious use of that information."

Love was indicted Thursday on one count of computer hacking and one count of aggravated identify theft. If convicted, he faces up to 12 years in prison.

He and three co-conspirators were indicted in October on charges they plotted to hack into databases of NASA, the Environmental Protection Agency and the FBI to steal "large quantities" of data and personal information in order to disrupt governmental functions.

Love, arrested in October in England, is being investigated for similar activities in Virginia and Britain.

He remains free on bail in England, the British newspaper Register said. His attorney, Karen Todner, indicated she would fight any extradition request from the United States.
