WASHINGTON, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- The Pentagon is launching its very own made in the U.S.A. campaign.

A new Department of Defense policy insists all American flags purchased by the U.S. military must be entirely made in the U.S., "including the materials and components thereof."

The policy, issued in a memo from the director of defense procurement and acquisition policy Richard Ginman, was pushed by Rep. Mike Thompason, D-Calif., as part of the Berry Amendment. The 1941 law restricts the Defense Department from purchasing certain goods, including food, clothing, fabric, textiles or tools that aren't grown or produced in the U.S.

Thompson's amendment was passed as part of January's $1.1 trillion omnibus appropriations bill and signed by President Obama.

According to Pentagon spokesman Mike Wright, the policy went into effect Friday.
