Report: Debbie Dingell plans to seek John Dingell's House seat

WASHINGTON, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Debbie Dingell plans to run for the seat being vacated by her husband, U.S. Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich, political strategists told the Washington Post Tuesday.

Citing two Democratic strategists it said were knowledgeable about Debbie Dingell's plans, the newspaper reported she is expected to make an official announcement by the end of the week.

She is an experienced Democratic strategist and currently serves as chairwoman of the Wayne State University Board of Governors.

John Dingell has praised his wife as his closest confidant, recently telling the Detroit News, "She's been my guide, my counsel, my friend and my closest adviser."

John Dingell announced Monday he will leave Congress at the end of his term this year. The longest-serving member of Congress, he has served more than 58 years in the House, and has been instrumental in gaining passage of numerous historic pieces of legislation, including Medicare and the Affordable Care Act.
