SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Utah police are trying to piece together the cause of a deadly highway crash that killed three people and seriously injured six more.
The Utah Highway Police were investigating the accident, which happened about 3:15 p.m. Sunday on Highway 36 near Stansbury Parkway in Tooele County. Trooper Mark Thompson said the driver of a minivan carrying youths from a local church headed to Salt Lake City for a Christian rock concert attempted to change lanes and clipped the front of a sport-utility vehicle. The minivan swerved out of control and into the oncoming lane, into the path of a Subaru sedan.
The Subaru's two passengers, Urban Montoya, 61, and Melodie Clement, 58, were killed instantly, the Salt Lake Tribune said. The front seat passenger in the minivan was also killed. That victim's identity has not been released pending family notification, police said.
Six others in the minivan, ranging from 14 to 17 years old, were ejected from the vehicle onto the pavement and suffered serious injuries.
Troopers said the investigation is continuing. No charges have been filed.
