Pipe bomb discovered in Anchorage, Alaska, airport

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Anchorage, Alaska, airport police said a pipe bomb was discovered in the carry-on luggage of an oil worker headed for the state's North Slope.

After TSA agents discovered the explosive device Sunday, the security checkpoint at Anchorage's Ted Stevens International Airport was shut down for an hour Sunday afternoon, the Anchorage Daily News reported Monday.

Jesse Davis, chief of the airport's police and fire departments, said the unidentified man claimed it was an "avalanche device." Davis added, "I don't know of any avalanche dangers up on the North Slope."

Police downplayed the incident, saying the public was never in danger and the pipe bomb appeared to lack a triggering device.

The FBI is interviewing the man, Davis said.
