Nevada reports 14 cases of latent TB at high school

HENDERSON, Nev., Feb. 11 (UPI) -- At least 14 people have tested positive for latent tuberculosis at Coronado High School in Henderson, Nev., state health officials said.

Southern Nevada Health District spokeswoman Stephanie Bethel confirmed the figure late Monday, KVVU-TV, Las Vegas, reported.

Bethel said the 14 who tested positive were not sick or contagious, and more tests will be required to determine whether they need treatment.

Health officials say only those with active tuberculosis can spread it through coughing, and SNDH Director Dr. Joseph Iser said, "Nine out of 10 people who develop latent TB will never come down with active TB."

The results reported Monday were the results of testing carried out late last month -- the second round of tests that began in November after someone at the school was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis, the report said.

No one else at the school has reported symptoms and there was no indication any of those who tested positive are out of school, the report said.
