Building under construction in Salt Lake City burns

SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Dozens of firefighters fought a four-alarm blaze Sunday night at a building under construction in downtown Salt Lake City, authorities said.

The Salt Lake Tribune reported at least 60 firefighters spent more than an hour extinguishing the fire at the 40-foot-tall building.

No injuries were reported but the damage was estimated at $1.5 million. The cause of the fire had not been determined, the newspaper said.

People were evacuated from a nearby supermarket as a precaution as embers from the burning building drifted over the area. Firefighters also directed their hoses to the supermarket's roof to prevent it from catching fire.

"I've never seen anything like it before," bystander Kitti Smit said.
