21-year-old critically injured when buried by Utah avalanche

AMERICAN FORK, Utah, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- A Brigham Young University student was critically injured after being caught in an avalanche in Utah, authorities said.

Ashleigh Nicole Cox, 21, was snowshoeing with several others in the American Fork Canyon when she became caught in the avalanche at 5:40 p.m. Saturday, Utah County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Spencer Cannon said.

The avalanche pushed her into a stream, and those nearby were unable to dig her out, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

Emergency responders rescued her, but she had been buried for 40 minutes and did not have a pulse.

Rescue officials said they restarted her heart, and Cox was moved to the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.

The Utah Avalanche Center had warned of a high risk of avalanches for the weekend, the Tribune said.
