LOS ANGELES, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- A 98-year-old Los Angeles woman was killed Saturday when fire swept through her well-secured house, firefighters said.
Crews were unable to breach a metal security door in time to save the woman, who was pulled unconscious from the smoke-filled South LA residence and pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The victim's name was not immediately released.
A neighbor tried to enter the house before the first engines arrived but was forced back by the smoke and flames, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
It took 50 firefighters -- who cut holes in the roof to vent out the thick smoke -- about 18 minutes to snuff out the predawn blaze.
