Stolen Stradivarius violin recovered in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- A 300-year-old Stradivarius violin taken from the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra's concertmaster in an armed robbery has been recovered, police said Thursday.

Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn announced the violin was found in a suitcase in a Milwaukee attic, with the help of citizens' tips and information about the stun gun used in the robbery.

The violin, constructed in 1715 and known as the Lipinski Strad after a former owner, was stolen from violinist Frank Almond, 27, when he was attacked with a stun gun in a parking lot after he performed at Milwaukee's Wisconsin Lutheran College in December.

Almond is the concertmaster, or first violinist, of the orchestra.

Three suspects -- two men, 42 and 36, and a woman, 32 -- were arrested Monday in the attack and theft. Police determined one suspect, Universal Allah, wielded the stun gun, and Salah Jones, was the main suspect, based on a tip.

Jones has been linked to a prior art theft, the newspaper said.

The violin appears to be in good condition, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra President Mark Niehaus said Thursday.

Almond is scheduled to play the instrument Monday evening at a recital focusing on music associated with the Lipinski Strad.
