BRADENTON, Fla., Feb. 6 (UPI) -- A driver in Bradenton, Fla., was cited for backing into a group of people, killing three and severely injuring four, police said.
Doreen Landstra, 79, was backing out of a parking space in a church parking lot at a 55-and-older retirement community Sunday when she struck the group, the (Bradenton, Fla.) Herald reported Thursday.
She believed her vehicle was in drive instead of reverse when her car moved backward and struck the pedestrians, witnesses and an unidentified Florida Highway Patrol crash investigator said.
Wednesday she was cited for "improper backing," the Florida Highway Patrol reported.
Landstra was involved in a similar incident in 2011 in Michigan, when she pulled into a restaurant parking space and applied the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal. Her car struck the building, damaging a railing, glass and part of the building, a crash report supplied to the newspaper by the Bath Township, Mich., Police Department.
