NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu was re-elected to a second term handily Saturday, election results showed.
The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune said Landrieu, 53, easily beat back the challenges of Michael Bagneris and Danatus King. With all precincts counted, the incumbent Democrat snared 64 percent of the votes cast to 33 percent for Bagneris and 3 percent for King, the newspaper said.
"I heard you as clear as the bells pealing off the beautiful St. Louis Cathedral, the 'cling, cling, cling' of the streetcar line," Landrieu told his supporters after claiming victory. "You are as clear as the beautiful roar of the Rebirth Brass Band.
"And you are as clear as the anguished cry from the mother who lost her child. Too many of our children lost on our streets. I listened to you and I have heard, and the whole world heard you too. And this is what you said: 'We won't go back. We will press on.'"
