ST. PAUL, Minn., Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Minnesota prosecutors said they cannot prove beyond reasonable doubt St. Paul archdiocese officials violated reporting laws in a priest sex abuse case.
Ramsey County Attorney John Choi said there are credible allegations against officials in the archdiocese who knew a priest, Curtis Wehmeyer, was a sexual deviant but ignored allegations he was acting inappropriately with children for more than a decade, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported Wednesday.
Wehmeyer has since been convicted of molesting two children and possessing child pornography. He is serving a five-year prison term.
St. Paul Police Chief Tom Smith said his officers were angered when diocesan officials tipped off Wehmeyer he was about to be arrested.
Choi cautioned just because his office has chosen not to prosecute in the Wehmeyer case, other instances of alleged abuse remain under investigation and if church officials are found to have known abuse was taking place charges could be filed in those cases.
