Teacher arrested for pot-laced food at potluck dinner

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- A California elementary school teacher has been arrested and charged with poisoning co-workers with food laced with marijuana at a potluck dinner.

Police in Benicia say food Theresa Gilmete Badger, 47, brought to the Nov. 21 dinner sickened several people, including a juvenile, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday.

Several people became sick, saying they felt under the influence of a controlled substance. One person at the dinner took food home, where a juvenile who ate it also became ill, police said.

A woman at the party was admitted to a hospital later in the evening. A second woman was hospitalized the next day. Tests revealed she had consumed THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana, police said.

The school district reported the incident to Benicia police, who determined Badger brought the drug-laced food to the party.

Badger, a teacher at Matthew Turner Elementary School, was jailed Friday in lieu of $15,000 bond.
