Man charged after daughter, 6, killed by truck driven by 13-year-old

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Jan. 22 (UPI) -- A Florida man has been arrested in the death of his daughter, who was run over by a 13-year-old girl driving a truck in which he was a passenger, police say.

The Florida Highway Patrol said David Russell Courson, 38, of Monticello, was the only adult present when his daughter, Rebecca Courson, 6, was killed, the Tallahassee (Fla.) Democrat reported Tuesday.

The daughter was playing in the yard of Courson's home Monday afternoon when the 13-year-old started to move the truck, owned by Courson, to a different part of the yard, police said.

The 13-year-old girl was not related to Courson, who was also in the truck with an 8-year-old boy.

The girl put the truck in reverse, backing over Rebecca. The driver then pulled forward and parked the truck.

Rebecca was found injured when Courson and the two children got out of the truck, said FHP spokesman Sgt. Aaron Stephens.

She died later at a Tallahassee hospital.

Troopers smelled alcohol on the breath of both the girl driver and a 12-year-old who was not in the truck, Stephens said. Courson had also been drinking. A bag or marijuana was found inside the truck.

Courson has been charged with manslaughter. The 13-year-old girl could also face charges, Stephens said.
