Kwame Kilpatrick sent to Oklahoma prison

DETROIT, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's new home is a now medium-security prison in Oklahoma, the U.S. Bureau of Prisons says.

On its website, the bureau said Kilpatrick is an inmate at the prison in El Reno, the Detroit News reported. The mayor had requested incarceration in Texas, where his family moved from Detroit.

Kilpatrick had been housed temporarily in a federal transfer facility in Oklahoma City but was sent to El Reno on Tuesday, the News said.

Kilpatrick was sentenced to 28 years after his conviction last year on federal corruption charges. His father, Bernard, who was convicted with him on a tax charge, is serving his 15-month sentence in Texas.

Bobby Ferguson, a longtime Kilpatrick friend and city contractor, was also found guilty and sentenced to 21 years. Jury selection began Tuesday in Detroit as Ferguson went on trial in a bid-rigging case, the Detroit Free Press reported.
