Oakland brothers killed days apart

OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 21 (UPI) -- An Oakland woman is grieving the death of two teenage sons gunned down days apart in the California city's first and fourth homicides of 2014, family said.

Dinyal New said her 13-year-old son, Lee Weathersby III, was killed early New Year's Day walking home after attending a party at a neighborhood Boys and Girls Club. Days after the tragedy, the teen's older brother, Lamar Broussard, 19, and a friend were killed just 2 blocks away when unidentified gunmen ambushed their car, unfurling a hail of gunfire, the Oakland Tribune reported Tuesday.

Speaking at a makeshift memorial at the site of the older son's death, New told reporters, "I have no more kids."

Police have not ruled out the possibility the two killings are related to an ongoing dispute over the younger brother's death, though family members said they believe it is unlikely because it was not widely known the two teens were related.

Detectives told the Tribune Broussard's killing was targeted and not a random act. No suspects had been identified in either case.
