CHINO, Calif., Jan. 17 (UPI) -- A 48-year old man allegedly struck a 16-year-old California high school student in the head with a hammer, leaving the teen in critical condition, police said.
The youth was attacked Thursday across the street from Chino High School and officials locked down the campus and a nearby elementary school, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Gregory U. Richmond of Chino was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, police said.
The victim was taken to a hospital on a helicopter.
It was unclear if Richmond knew the victim or what led to the attack, the Times said.
