Three dead following LA house fire

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- A house fire of undetermined origin Monday left a father and two children dead and a mother clinging to life in Los Angeles, officials said.

The incident was reported at 4:37 a.m., Los Angeles Fire Capt. Jaime Moore said. The mother, a son and daughter, were found huddled together in one room in the "metal-clad, barn-like home," while the father was found in a nearby hallway. None of the four had a pulse when firefighters arrived and all had suffered smoke inhalation. The father had been burned, as well, Moore said.

Firefighters resuscitated the mother but she remained in critical condition, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Fire investigators remained on the scene, attempting to determine how the blaze began. Officials said there were no smoke alarms inside and it appeared the family did not have an escape plan.

The victims' names and ages were not reported.
