Three children die in Hammond, Ind., house fire

HAMMOND, Ind., Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Three children are dead and two others are hospitalized, along with their father, after a house fire in Hammond, Ind., officials said.

The fire was reported at about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, the Chicago Tribune reported. The home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

Hammond Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Margraf said the 27-year-old father managed to make it out with two of his sons, ages 2 and 6. The father suffered third-degree burns and the children suffered smoke inhalation.

The three were taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, where the boys were in critical but stable condition and the father was in critical condition, hospital spokeswoman Marisa Kollias said early Thursday.

Three other children, ages 7 months, 3 and 4, were found dead in the home.
