Chicago archdiocese releasing files on abusive priests

CHICAGO, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- The Archdiocese of Chicago plans to give lawyers suing the Catholic Church its files on alleged child molester priests, Cardinal Francis George says.

In a letter to priests in the archdiocese, George said the files will also be made public, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Jeff Anderson, a lawyer in St. Paul, Minn., involved in the litigation, said the archdiocese will hand over the files next week, obeying a court order. But, he said, ensuring no information on victims becomes public will take at least a week.

The files have information on 30 priests. Most of them are already on a diocesan website that lists priests with substantiated allegations of molesting children.

"Publishing for all to read the actual records of these crimes raises transparency to a new level," George said in his letter. "It will be helpful, we pray, for some, but painful for many."
