DENVER, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- The Colorado State Patrol said Tuesday a phone number once used to guide people to child-passenger safety resources is now owned by an adult phone service.

The State Patrol said the phone number had previously been promoted by various state and local agencies statewide. The State Patrol said while it and many of its partners no longer use or promote the number, several websites and outdated educational materials still listed it.

"Instead of leading concerned parents to child-passenger safety resources, the phone number would have directed them to professionally inappropriate content," the State Patrol said in a release.

The law enforcement agency said it has contacted its partner agencies and webmasters of sites containing the phone number.

"In our efforts to reach out to all communities in Colorado, our primary goal is to provide safety resources and information that will have a positive impact and protect our children," Col. Scott Hernandez, chief of the State Patrol, said. "We are frustrated that a once valuable public resource was made to look so unsavory."
