Father-in-law of missing Utah woman wants judge to stop sale of home

PUYALLUP, Wash., Jan. 2 (UPI) -- The father-in-law of missing Utah mom Susan Cox Powell has asked a judge for a hearing over the sale of his home, saying the auction would leave him homeless.

Stephen Powell says he received notice of the pending sale too late to meet a filing deadline, and has asked a Washington judge to stop the Feb. 7 sale, the Salt Lake Tribune reported Wednesday.

Powell is due to be released from a Washington state prison in March after serving a 30-month sentence for 14 counts of voyeurism for secretly taking photos of young girls in the bathroom of their home.

Powell said in his court filing he has not been able to remove his personal property from the home, and the sale would leave him and two adult children homeless.

Josh Powell, Stephen Powell's son, was the prime suspect in the disappearance of his wife, Susan, in 2009. Josh killed himself and the couple's two sons in 2012.

The home is being sold to fund partial settlement of a $1.9 million judgement.
