14-year-old mistaken for burglar killed by stepfather in Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- A Colorado Springs man fatally shot his 14-year-old stepdaughter, mistaking her for a burglar, police said.

The shooting occurred just before 6 a.m. Monday in their northeast Colorado Springs home, police spokesman Larry Herbert said in a statement.

"The initial call came in as a burglary-in-progress," Herbert said.

The girl was taken to a hospital but died of gunshot wounds, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported.

The names of the stepfather and the girl are not being released, and police are investigating the incident.

No arrests have been made.
