WOBURN, Mass., Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Middlesex County, Mass., prosecutors were deficient in releasing a domestic violence suspect in August, an independent review said Thursday.
The review said Jared Remy should have been held on bail. Remy allegedly returned after his arraignment to the Waltham, Mass., home he shared with his girlfriend, Jennifer Martel, and allegedly killed her the next day, the Boston Globe reported Thursday.
Remy, son of Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, allegedly assaulted Martel Aug. 13, was arraigned and released Aug. 14 and allegedly slashed her to death Aug. 15.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said in a statement Thursday she has "already implemented changes to address the deficiencies" noted in the review by former Essex County District Attorney Kevin Burke and Norfolk County First Assistant District Attorney Jeanmarie Carroll.
Prosecutors should have done more to pursue information about Remy and should have assessed the situation more thoroughly before his arraignment, Ryan said.
