CHICAGO, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- A Houston woman died after falling into the icy Chicago River early Tuesday morning in downtown Chicago, police said.
The victim was identified as Alicia Garnett, 30, Tuesday afternoon, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Hailey Barham of Indianapolis said she was driving by about 4 a.m. when she saw a "hysterical" woman who said her friend had fallen into the river. Barham called 911 and said police divers pulled the woman out of the river within about 15 minutes.
"We pulled up to this intersection and her friend was hysterical because she needed somebody to call the ambulance," Barham told the Chicago Tribune. "She had been talking to a taxi cab driver and he hadn't called it. So I called the police and they arrived very quickly and probably in 10-15 minutes pulled her out."
Garnett was pronounced dead at 5:20 a.m. at a Chicago hospital.
Barham said Garnett was staying at the Omni Hotel with two friends.
