More U.N. staff sent to Central African Republic

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- The United Nations said Tuesday its refugee agency sent additional emergency staff to the Central African Republic to deal with those displaced by violence.

A U.N. statement said 210,000 people have been forcibly displaced in the past two weeks by violence in Bangui, the embattled capital.

"In Bangui, our staff is reporting continued shooting and a mood of widespread fear," Adrian Edwards, spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, said in Geneva, Switzerland.

He added a community of 40,000 people, uprooted earlier in December, was found by U.N. teams on the outskirts of the city, out of reach until Monday because of the heavy fighting.

More than 700,000 people have been displaced in the country since the current crisis began a year ago, the statement said. It did not identify the number of new emergency team members sent by the United Nations.
