MONTEREY, Calif., Dec. 16 (UPI) -- California fire officials said a wildfire sparked overnight Sunday in Los Padres National Forest, consuming some 200 acres in a night.
The blaze began along the Big Sur coast, forcing residents in the area to evacuate, fire officials told the San Francisco Chronicle. The area is about 30 miles south of Monterey in Southern California, where smoke from the fire could be seen.
On Monday, officials with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said about 130 firefighters had been called in to handle the blaze. It could not give an estimate of how many people were forced to evacuate, saying that job was left to local law enforcement to carry out.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the wildfire remains under investigation but officials said unusually dry conditions and the lack of humidity were contributing factors.
