FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Dec. 10 (UPI) -- A Florida man faces charges for allegedly beating up the suspect in his son's death in a courthouse bathroom, authorities say.
Juan Gonzalez, 56, of Davie, is charged with two counts of battery, one for allegedly punching John Powers, 54, and the other for allegedly grabbing the throat of Jay Israel, 59, a friend of Powers who also was in the bathroom, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Tuesday.
Powers, who is charged in a 2011 drunken driving accident in which Gonzalez's son, Juan Gonzalez Jr., died, was accosted Monday.
"You killed my son," Gonzalez allegedly told Powers. "I will be watching you."
Powers, bloodied in the assault, immediately went into the courtroom of Broward Circuit Judge Marc Gold and told him what had happened, the newspaper said.
An arrest report states Powers was making a U-turn and the younger Gonzalez ran his motorcycle into Powers' sport utility vehicle, suffering fatal injuries. Powers tested at 0.15, well above the legal limit for drunken driving and was charged with DUI manslaughter and manslaughter with an unlawful blood-alcohol level.
Seven years ago, the elder Gonzalez pleaded no contest to assault with a deadly weapon, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving, court records show.
